As the School of Nursing and Midwifery celebrated International Nurses and Midwives Days, recognition was given to the achievements of staff and students in the areas of teaching, learning, and research excellence at an awards evening at Customs House.

According to Head of School Professor Catherine Turner, the Awards evening acknowledges the hard work and exceptional contributions staff and students have made to the School and wider community over the past year.

“As a relatively young School, we have made great in-roads into nursing and midwifery research and education” said Professor Turner.

“As we recognise all hard-working nurses and midwives around the world, UQ seeks to reward our leaders in the areas of nursing and midwifery research, research supervision and education” said Professor Turner.

“I congratulate this year’s outstanding and deserving award recipients,” said Professor Turner.

Professor Nicholas Fisk Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Science was also in attendance and acknowledged the importance of nurses and in particular midwives in ensuring positive health outcomes for mothers, infants and families around the world.

Professor Fisk recognised the significant contribution the School of Nursing and Midwifery has made and continues to make in providing a learning environment in which students are able to ‘Learn from the Best, with the Best, to be the Best’.

Professor Michael Keniger Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor echoed these sentiments, praising the contribution the School of Nursing and Midwifery has made over the past seven years to The University of Queensland.

Sharon Doran a great granddaughter of Sister Elizabeth Kenny was also in attendance to present the inaugural Elizabeth Kenny scholarship to PhD candidate Mary Boyd, and  briefly spoke about the remarkable accomplishments of Sister Elizabeth Kenny in treating infantile paralysis or polio.

Staff and students attended the evening along with representatives from UQ Clinical Schools and teaching partner organisations.

A fantastic evening was had by all.
